What is Fair Trade and Why It Matters

You've seen the label. But what does "fair trade" actually mean — and why should it influence where you shop?

Fair Trade: The Simple Version

Fair trade is a trading partnership that aims for greater equity in international trade. It ensures that producers — especially in developing countries — receive fair payment for their work, operate in safe conditions, and are treated with dignity. It also promotes environmental sustainability and prohibits child and forced labour.

In practice, fair trade means the person who made your shirt earned a living wage. It means they worked in a safe environment. It means their community benefited from the transaction, not just a distant corporation.

What is the WFTO?

The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) is the global authority on fair trade. Unlike some certifications that only verify individual products, WFTO certification verifies the entire organisation — its practices, its supply chain, its governance, and its impact. Members must demonstrate compliance with 10 Fair Trade Principles and undergo independent monitoring and peer reviews.

One Way Kenya is a proud WFTO member. This means every product we sell — not just selected items — is produced under verified fair trade conditions.

The 10 Fair Trade Principles (Simplified)

  1. Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers
  2. Transparency and accountability in all dealings
  3. Fair trade practices — no exploitation, ever
  4. Fair payment — wages that cover living costs
  5. No child or forced labour
  6. Commitment to non-discrimination and gender equity
  7. Good working conditions — safe, healthy, humane
  8. Capacity building — helping producers grow their skills
  9. Promoting fair trade — raising awareness
  10. Respect for the environment

Why It Matters When You Shop

The fashion industry is one of the world's most exploitative. Fast fashion relies on poverty wages, unsafe factories, and environmental destruction to keep prices low. Every time you choose fair trade, you're refusing to fund that system.

Your purchase from One Way Kenya supports Kenyan artisans earning fair wages, preserving cultural craft traditions, and building sustainable livelihoods. It's fashion that feels as good as it looks.

Choose fair. Choose One Way Kenya.
